Armageddon in chess is a special type of chess game that is most often used as a tiebreak in a tournament. It is a single game that is guaranteed to produce a result, as Black has draw odds, meaning that if Black draws the game, then they win. To compensate, White has more time on the clock, and the time controls for Armageddon games are typically 4 minutes for Black and 5 minutes for White. The rules of chess stay the same within an Armageddon game, but there are two additional rules: if Black manages to draw the game, the draw is counted as a win in the context of the tournament, and Black starts with less time on the clock than White. Armageddon games are usually the last resort to determine a winner, and they are preceded by other types of tiebreaks, like a series of blitz games. Armageddon games are a particular variation of fast chess, which is subdivided, by decreasing time controls, into rapid chess, blitz chess, and bullet chess.
