An ARP table, or Address Resolution Protocol table, is a database that is maintained by a device on a network. It stores a list of IP addresses and their corresponding MAC addresses, which are used to identify devices on the network. The table is typically stored in the devices memory and is updated dynamically as devices are added or removed from the network. Each device that is connected to a network has its own ARP table, responsible for storing the address pairs that a specific device has communicated with. The most important data in an ARP table is the MAC and IP address pairs of the devices on the network. It also contains other valuable information, such as the specific interface a MAC address is connected to, and how long to keep the ARP entry within the table. The ARP table plays a critical role in network communication, allowing devices to accurately determine the physical address of other devices and improve the efficiency of network communication by allowing devices to quickly and directly send data packets to the correct destination without having to rely on a broadcast message.
