An arraignment hearing is a legal proceeding that occurs after a defendant is arrested and charged with a crime. It is the first time a criminal defendant appears in court to enter a plea, argue for bail, and request the appointment of an attorney. During the arraignment, the defendant is formally charged with a crime and informed of their constitutional rights, including the right to remain silent, the right to an attorney, and the right to a trial by jury. The defendant is also asked to enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. If the defendant pleads guilty, the judge may impose a sentence at that time. If the defendant pleads not guilty, the case will proceed to a pre-trial conference where the parties will exchange discovery and negotiate possible resolutions. The judge also decides if the defendant will be held in prison or released until the trial, and if the defendant cannot "post bail" (pay the money), the judge may order the defendant to be remanded into the custody of the U.S. Marshals pending trial.
