Arthritis is a term used to describe joint pain or joint disease, and there are more than 100 types of arthritis and related conditions. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis involves the wearing away of the cartilage that caps the bones in your joints, which can cause bone grinding directly on bone, leading to pain and restricted movement. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, beginning with the lining of joints, and can cause inflammation, pain, and damage to the joint lining. Other types of arthritis include gout, lupus, and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Arthritis can cause pain, swelling, and limited movement in joints and connective tissues in the body. Symptoms of arthritis may include pain, stiffness, swelling, warmth, or redness in one or more joints. There is no cure for arthritis, but there are a variety of treatments available, ranging from physical or occupational therapy to joint surgery.
