Auto upgradation is a scheme offered by Indian Railways that allows passengers to be upgraded to a higher class without any extra charge against the available seats. The passengers are chosen at random and mechanically throughout the chart development process. Passengers can book the service online or offline at ticket counters at stations or through the option of auto upgradation in IRCTC online portal. Here are some key points related to the auto upgradation scheme of IRCTC:

  • The passengers are required to give the option for being considered for upgradation at the time of ticket booking. If no option is given at the time of filling up of requisition form, the same is treated as "yes" and passenger(s) are considered for upgradation.
  • The passengers for upgradation are selected automatically on a random basis by the system at the time of preparation of reservation charts.
  • The auto upgradation in IRCTC is done automatically by PRS (Passenger Reservation System) during chart preparation. The Train Conductor and Ticket Examiner have no right to upgrade the ticket of any passenger in any train.
  • If a passenger whose ticket has been upgraded cancels his/her ticket, he/she has to pay only the cancellation charge for the original class.
  • Auto upgradation of tickets is done in one class above class only. For example, sleeper to third AC, third AC to second AC, and second AC to first AC. Under this scheme, the facility of confirmed seat is given only to the waitlisted passengers. The remaining seats of the train are allotted to the passengers who have opted for auto upgradation.
