An air waybill (AWB) is a document that accompanies goods shipped by an international air courier to provide detailed information about the shipment and allow it to be tracked. It is a unique code assigned to a package or parcel, and it is more commonly known as a FedEx shipping label or tracking number. An AWB serves as a receipt of goods by an airline, as well as a contract of carriage between the shipper and the carrier. It is a legal agreement that is enforceable by law. The AWB contains all of the package information as well as its barcoding. It is a type of tracking number, with a 3 digit airline identifier and an 8 digit shipment serial number. The purpose of the AWB number is to provide all the relevant information about the shipment and, most importantly, allow it to be tracked. An AWB tracking number will vary depending on the carrier managing the delivery of the parcel, but it usually has around 11 characters. The AWB will inform all of the various actors involved in the transportation of the parcel of specific information relevant for its handling.
