Back office work refers to the administrative and support functions of a company that are not client-facing and do not directly generate revenue. These functions include settlements, clearances, managing inventory, processing sales orders, onboarding new employees, finance and accounting, procurement, HR, legal, and customer support. Back-office personnel provide essential functions to the business, enabling and equipping front-office personnel to perform their client-facing duties. The back office is an essential part of any firm and associated job titles are often classified under "Operations". The term "back office" originated when early companies designed their offices so that the front portion contained the associates who interact with customers, and the back portion of the office contained associates who have no interaction with customers, such as accounting clerks. Back office jobs focus on the day-to-day administrative operations of a company, particularly as it relates to processing paperwork and handling other tasks. Despite the name, many back office positions work outside of the companys headquarters, so its common to find work from home positions for these roles.
