Bactrim is a combination of two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, and is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. Some of the infections that Bactrim is used to treat include:

• Middle ear infections
• Urinary tract infections
• Respiratory infections
• Intestinal infections
• Pneumocystis-type pneumonia
• Travelers diarrhea
• Shigellosis (bacillary dysentery)
• Granuloma inguinale
• Meningitis

It is important to note that Bactrim should only be used to treat infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. Bactrim should not be used to treat viral infections such as the common cold. Additionally, Bactrim should not be used by children less than 2 months of age due to the risk of serious side effects.
