Bactroban is a topical antibiotic ointment that contains mupirocin as the active ingredient. It is used to treat certain types of skin infections such as impetigo, infection of the hair root, boils, and secondarily infected traumatic skin lesions due to susceptible strains of S. aureus and S. pyogenes. Bactroban works by killing bacteria that cause infection. It is for use on the skin only and should not be used in the eyes, nose, mouth, or lips. Bactroban is usually applied three times per day for up to ten days, depending on the response. The most commonly reported side effects of Bactroban include itching, dryness, burning, redness, stinging, pain, and swelling. If you experience any side effects or allergic reactions due to taking Bactroban ointment, even if the problem is not listed, check with your doctor as soon as possible.
