The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) is a non-profit, multistakeholder governance group that promotes better standards in cotton farming and practices across 21 countries. BCI cotton is made in collaboration with the Better Cotton Initiative, a not-for-profit organization stewarding the global Better Cotton standards, and bringing together cotton’s complex supply chain, from the farmers to the retailers. BCI aims to transform cotton production worldwide by developing Better Cotton as a sustainable mainstream commodity. BCI cotton is produced by farmers who minimize the harmful impact of crop protection practices, use water efficiently, care for the health of the soil, enhance biodiversity and care for and preserve the quality of the fiber. BCI cotton is not organic, but it is a step towards more sustainable cotton production. BCI is currently the largest cotton sustainability program in the world, and as of 2017, Better Cotton accounts for 14% of global cotton production.
