BIA stands for Business Impact Analysis, which is a process that organizations use to determine how critical various business activities and resources are to continuing normal business operations. The BIA predicts the consequences of a disruption to a business and gathers information needed to develop recovery strategies. It is an essential component of an organizations business continuity plan (BCP) . The BIA process focuses on the effects or consequences of an interruption to critical business functions and attempts to identify the most critical business processes, the impact of business disruption in those processes, and the resources needed to restore them. The BIA report should document the potential impacts resulting from the disruption of business functions and processes, and scenarios resulting in significant business interruption should be assessed in terms of their potential operational and financial impacts. The BIA is generally a multiphase process that includes securing approval for the BIA from senior management, gathering trained people who can perform a BIA, preparing a BIA plan, gathering information from questionnaires, interviews, and documentation that is relevant to the analysis, evaluating the collected information and interview data, and developing strategies, solutions, and plans based on the recovery requirements.
