BIM stands for Building Information Modeling, which is a process for creating and managing digital representations of the physical and functional characteristics of places. BIM software is used by individuals, businesses, and government agencies who plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain buildings and diverse physical infrastructures, such as water, refuse, electricity, gas, communication utilities, roads, railways, bridges, ports, and tunnels. BIM is a highly collaborative process that allows architects, engineers, real estate developers, contractors, manufacturers, and other construction professionals to plan, design, and construct a structure or building within one 3D model. BIM models are virtualizations of a project from concept to completion and on through its entire lifecycle. BIM objects, the components that make up a BIM model, are intelligent, have geometry, and store data. If any element is changed, BIM software updates the model to reflect that change, allowing the model to remain consistent and coordinated throughout the entire process so that structural engineers, architects, MEP engineers, designers, project managers, and contractors can work in a more collaborative environment. BIM has the potential to play a vital role in the construction industry by improving processes and technology involved in the construction process, solving constructions communications concerns, and providing a shared knowledge resource that can be used as a reliable basis for decisions during a buildings lifecycle.
