Bioengineering food refers to the process of modifying the genetic material of organisms used in food production using various methods of genetic engineering. Bioengineered foods are also known as genetically modified foods or genetically engineered foods. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) defines bioengineered food as food that contains detectable genetic material that has been modified through certain laboratory techniques and for which the modification could not be obtained through conventional breeding or found in nature. The process of creating bioengineered food involves identifying a useful gene from another organism that one would like to add, combining it with other genetic elements, and then inserting the genetic elements into the targets genome. The USDA requires that bioengineered foods or foods that contain bioengineered food ingredients must be labeled with the bioengineered food disclosure. Highly refined ingredients and foods that are primarily meat, poultry, or egg products do not require a bioengineered food disclosure.
