Broccolini is a hybrid vegetable that was developed over eight years by the Sakata Seed Company of Yokohama, Japan as a cross between broccoli and Chinese broccoli, rather than being the product of genetic modification. It is a registered trademark of Mann Packing. Broccolini has smaller florets and longer, thin stalks than broccoli, and its flavor is sweet, with notes of both broccoli and asparagus, although it is not closely related to the latter. It is a member of the species Brassica oleracea, which includes regular broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower. Broccolini is a more delicate vegetable than broccoli and requires less cooking, and its stalks are much more tender. The entire vegetable (leaves, young stems, unopened flower shoots, and flowers) is consumable.
