Bursitis of the hip is a painful condition that occurs when one or more of the bursae in the hip become inflamed. Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones, tendons, and muscles near the joints. There are two major bursae in the hip that typically become irritated and inflamed: the trochanteric bursa and the iliopsoas bursa. Trochanteric bursitis occurs when the bursa covering the bony point of the hip bone called the greater trochanter becomes inflamed. Iliopsoas bursitis occurs when the bursa located on the inside (groin side) of the hip becomes inflamed. Symptoms of hip bursitis include hip pain, tenderness in the area of the point of the hip, swelling, redness, bruising, or a rash in the affected area, sharp or shooting pain, especially when you exercise or exert yourself, and a fever. To diagnose hip bursitis, a doctor will perform a comprehensive physical examination, looking for tenderness in the area of the point of the hip. They may also perform additional tests to rule out other possible injuries or conditions, such as imaging studies like X-rays, bone scanning, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. Treatment for hip bursitis may include nonsurgical treatments such as rest, ice, physical therapy, and steroid injections[[5]](https://familydoctor.or...
