Buscopan is a medicine used to relieve painful stomach cramps, including those linked with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bladder cramps, and period pain. It contains the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide, which is an antispasmodic medicine that helps the digestive system and bladder relax. Buscopan comes in the form of tablets and is available on prescription. It can also be bought over the counter in two different products: Buscopan Cramps and Buscopan IBS Relief. Buscopan can also be given by injection, but this is usually only done in a hospital.

Buscopan works by reducing the wave-like muscle contractions in the stomach, intestine, and bladder walls, but it doesn’t prevent them. It provides rapid relief of stomach pain with cramps and has a fast onset of action, working in just 15 minutes. The recommended dose for both adults and children older than 6 years is 2 tablets, 4 times daily, every 4–6 hours. However, Buscopan tablets should not be taken continuously for long periods of time.

Buscopan is not recommended for children under 6 years old. Patients with certain conditions, such as tachycardia, cardiac insufficiency or failure, and narrow-angle glaucoma, should use Buscopan with caution. As with any medication, Buscopan tablets can cause side effects, although not everyone would experience them. Some common side effects are dry mouth, blurred vision, and constipation. Severe side effects due to Buscopan are rare.
