Carboxymethylcellulose eye drops are used to relieve dry, irritated eyes. Dry eyes can be caused by various factors such as wind, sun, heating/air conditioning, computer use/reading, and certain medications. Carboxymethylcellulose eye drops are a type of eye lubricant that helps to keep the eye moist, protect the eye from injury and infection, and decrease symptoms of dry eyes such as burning, itching, and feeling as if something is in the eye. They may also be used as a protectant against further irritation due to exposure to wind or sun. Carboxymethylcellulose eye drops may contain other ingredients such as dextran, glycerin, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol 400 (PEG 400), polysorbate, polyvinyl alcohol, povidone, or propylene glycol. To use carboxymethylcellulose eye drops, one should wash their hands first, avoid touching the dropper or top of the ointment tube, tilt their head back, look up, and pull down the lower eyelid to make a pouch. For drops/gels, place the dropper directly over the eye and squeeze out 1 or 2 drops as needed. Look down and gently close the eye for 1 or 2 minutes.
