Catnip is a herb that is a member of the mint family and is easy to grow in North America. It contains the essential oil nepetalactone, which can turn even the laziest cat into a crazy furball if the cat has inherited the sensitivity to its effects. The trait doesnt emerge until a cat is between three and six months old, and sensitivity to this herb is hereditary. About two-thirds of cats have an intense attraction to catnip, and it is used as a recreational substance for the enjoyment of pet cats. Common behaviors cats display when they sense the bruised leaves or stems of catnip are rubbing on the plant, rolling on the ground, pawing at it, licking it, and even vocalizing. The effects of catnip are short-lived and only last 10-15 minutes, and most cats will walk away when they have had enough. Some cats may become very excited, while others may become much calmer while using catnip. If your cat has a more laid-back personality, he or she may become more docile, drool, and stretch. Catnip is considered nonaddictive and safe, and there is no specific dose for the herb. However, cats that frequent catnip can build up a tolerance that diminishes their response to the product, so it is recommended that you only let your cat enjoy catnip every few weeks.
