CBP One is a mobile application launched by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on October 28, 2020, available for free on the Apple App and Google Play stores. It serves as a single portal to a variety of CBP services and provides increased accessibility and transparency to some of CBP’s most utilized services. Through a series of guided questions, the app directs each type of user to the appropriate services based on their needs. CBP One began the rollout of its features, starting with an Inspection Appointment request feature for brokers/carriers/forwarders and I-94 Entry for travelers. Since then, CBP has continued to add new capabilities to CBP One. Some of the currently available features include:
- Scheduling appointments to enter the U.S., including to seek asylum
- Pre-scheduling inspection appointments for perishable cargo at certain ports of entry
- Accessing personal Trusted Traveler Programs information
- Providing advance traveler manifests for buses
CBP One has raised concerns, particularly as CBP expands its uses. One major concern is that its use is essentially obligatory for those seeking to be processed at the border and applying for humanitarian parole through the Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan (CHNV) program. Despite CBP’s efforts to improve CBP One, the app continues to raise concerns, particularly as CBP expands its uses.
