Cell modification refers to the process that occurs after cell division where the newly formed cells are structurally modified so that they can perform their function efficiently. These modifications are specialized or re-acquired by the cell after cell division that helps the cell in different beneficial ways. There are different types of cell modifications, including apical, basal, and lateral modifications. Examples of cell modifications include apical cilia, flagella, microvilli, pseudopods, extracellular matrix (ECM), cell wall, glycoprotein, collagen, hemidesmosomes, tight junctions, adhering junctions, and gap junctions. Gene modification therapies and cellular therapies are also forms of cell modification, where cells are manipulated to treat or fight specific diseases.
