Class III obesity, formerly known as morbid obesity, is a complex chronic condition in which a person has a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher. BMI is a screening tool that estimates the level of body fat based on a persons height and weight. Class III obesity is also categorized as "severe" obesity and is a serious health condition that can lead to several serious health issues. There are no specific symptoms of class III obesity, but it can cause side effects and complications in many parts of the body. Some of the health risks associated with class III obesity include high blood glucose (sugar) or diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol and triglycerides, heart attacks, bone and joint problems, and several other health conditions. If you have class III obesity, its important to remember that even a 5% to 10% weight loss from your starting weight can significantly improve your health by lowering blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and triglyceride levels, and it can also improve your quality of life.
