The stadium at Clemson University is known by two names: Memorial Stadium and Death Valley. Memorial Stadium is the official name of the stadium, and it was built in 1941-1942 in honor of former Clemson students and alumni who sacrificed their lives. However, the stadium has become more commonly known as "Death Valley" across the country, a nickname given to it by Presbyterian College Head Coach Lonnie McMillian in the late 1940s. The stadium is located in a valley, and the university cemetery once overlooked the field before the construction. Despite the popularity of the "Death Valley" nickname, the official name of the stadium is still Memorial Stadium.
