Code Silver is an emergency code used in hospitals to alert staff to a person with a weapon and/or active shooter and/or hostage situation. It is important to note that Code Silver should not be confused with a Silver Alert, which is used in some cities to alert the public to missing seniors in imminent danger due to severe cognitive impairment. Code Silver is a standardized code name adopted by many health care facilities to ensure uniformity in emergency codes across different facilities. In some hospitals, if a weapon is involved in a combative or abusive behavior by patients, families, visitors, staff, or physicians, Code Silver should be called instead of Code Gray.
