Consumption disease is another name for tuberculosis, a disease caused by bacteria that usually attacks the lungs. It was historically referred to as consumption due to the weight loss associated with the disease. The word "consumption" first appeared in the 14th century to describe any potentially fatal wasting disease, but over time it came to apply more specifically to tuberculosis.
