COP29 is the 29th annual Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held from November 11 to 22, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan. It is a major global climate summit where countries that are parties to the UN climate treaty gather to discuss, negotiate, and agree on actions to address climate change. COP29 was notably called "the finance COP" because a major focus was on agreeing new, increased climate finance goals to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to climate change impacts. One significant outcome was the agreement to triple finance to developing countries to $300 billion annually by 2035 and to coordinate efforts to mobilize up to $1.3 trillion per year by the same year. Other key agenda items included implementing measures to limit global warming to 1.5°C, operationalizing support funds for vulnerable communities, enhancing national climate commitments, and fostering green investments. The event drew tens of thousands of participants, including government officials, experts, activists, and representatives from various sectors.
