The CPC certification stands for Certified Professional Coder. It is a medical coding certification offered through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) that serves to provide evidence that an individual has the knowledge and skills needed to work as a professional coder. The CPC certification exam is a 150-question multiple-choice test designed to assess an individuals knowledge in 17 different areas, including anatomy, medical terminology, radiology, and medicine. The certification exam also assesses an individuals ability to properly apply diagnostic, procedural, and treatment codes using the standard medical coding systems. To earn the CPC credential, an individual must pass the CPC exam and be an AAPC member. While an individual cannot earn the CPC designation until they have two years of medical coding experience, they can take the exam prior to meeting this requirement. Upon passing the exam, their designation would be CPC-A, which signifies apprenticeship standing. They remain an apprentice until they fulfill the 2-year experience requirement, at which time they will submit proof of meeting the requirement, and their "A" will be removed. A CPC must fulfill and submit 36 continuing education units (CEUs) every 2 years.
