Cribbage, also known as crib, is a card game that involves playing and grouping cards in combinations to gain points. It is traditionally played by two players, but can be adapted for three or four players. The game is played with a standard 52-card deck and a cribbage board, which is used for scoring rather than the usual pencil and paper. The objective of the game is to be the first player to score a target number of points, typically 61 or 121.
The game consists of a series of hands, each of which consists of three parts: the deal, the play, and the show. During the deal, each player is dealt six cards and then discards two into the "crib". The crib is a separate hand that is scored by the dealer at the end of the round. After the crib is laid away, the non-dealer cuts the pack, and the dealer turns up the top card of the lower packet and places it face up on top of the pack. This card is the "starter".
During the play, players take turns playing cards from their hand and trying to form combinations that score points. Points are awarded for pairs, runs, and cards that add up to 15. The starter card is not used in the play phase of Cribbage, but is used later for making various card combinations that score points.
During the show, players score their hands and the crib. The player with the highest score wins the round and earns points towards the target score. The game continues until one player reaches the target score and wins the game.
Cribbage is a game of luck and arithmetic, but experience reveals depths of strategy, tactics, and psychology. It is a perfect way to while away an evening with friends or family.
