Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a rare autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the bone. It is also known as chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) . The immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue and organs, causing inflammation. CRMO usually affects children around the age of nine or ten and occurs more frequently in girls than in boys. The most common symptom of CRMO is pain in the bones, which may be accompanied by swelling in the joints and fever. CRMO can affect one bone or multiple bones and can cause bone deformities or slow growth in children. To diagnose CRMO, a pediatric rheumatologist will first exclude the possibility of other diseases causing the childs symptoms. The physician will conduct a full medical exam and will most likely order some tests, which may include X-rays, bone scans, MRI, blood tests, and bone biopsy. Treatment of CRMO depends on how severe it is and which bones it affects. Treatment usually starts with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) .
