Cross-checking is an infraction in the sport of ice hockey where a player checks an opponent by using the shaft of their ice hockey stick with both hands. It is considered a dangerous play because the shaft of the stick is considered a weapon. Cross-checking occurs when a player holds his stick with one hand at the top and the other about halfway down the shaft, and does a “pushing” motion with it into an opposing player. Referees make a fist with both hands and spread them about two feet apart, at chest level, to signal a cross-checking penalty. The severity of the penalty depends on the referees judgment as to the severity and intent of the cross-check. The NHL has recently made some tweaks to the way the rule will be called to promote offense and reduce injuries. The league has provided examples of cross-checks in different situations, such as in front of the net or when a player may be eligible to be checked but the opponent opts for a cross-check instead of legal body contact.
