CSR stands for Community Service Register, which is a register maintained in every Indian police station for non-cognizable offenses. If a crime has been committed and a complaint is filed at the police station, the police officer will give a receipt called CSR as proof of the receipt of the complaint. A CSR is also known as a daily diary report or diary report. It is a preliminary stage of complaint, and if the offense is a cognizable offense, a First Information Report (FIR) is made and registered. The CSR receipt is used as proof of filing a complaint in the police station and also for claiming insurance settlements. The onus is on the police to answer to higher authorities about their actions on CSR. Generally, the police may close the case as false or even with no response from the complainant, the case may be closed easily. There is no specific time frame for closing CSR, but after three years, it will be closed.
