CTP stands for Certified Treasury Professional, which is a certification awarded by the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP) to individuals who meet eligibility criteria and demonstrate current competency standards measured through the CTP examination. The CTP designation is considered a benchmark of competency in the finance profession and the leading credential in corporate treasury worldwide.
To earn the CTP certification, individuals must have between one to two years of work experience in cash or treasury management or corporate finance, and pass a closed-book exam consisting of 170 multiple-choice questions that can be completed on a computer. The exam is divided into five categories: treasury operations and controls, working capital management, cash and liquidity management, capital markets and funding, and corporate treasury function.
Once a CTP, certificants must abide by the CTP Standards of ethical conduct and must enhance their level of knowledge and skills by earning and reporting a prescribed number of continuing finance and business education credits every three years. The credential can be revoked by the Certification Committee of AFP for unethical behavior or by failure to earn and report continuing education credits.
The CTP designation is considered a benchmark in the financial profession, and CTPs can earn more money than their peers—as much as 13% more than those who arent certified as CTPs. They also have greater job security and are better able to market themselves in the industry.
