Cuffing season is a term used to describe the period of time during the colder months of the year when single people begin looking for short-term partnerships to pass the colder months of the year. It usually begins in October and lasts until just after Valentines Day. During this time, people may seek out relationships to get them through the long, chilly nights. The term "cuffing" refers to being "tied down" or "handcuffed" to another person during a specific time of year. The term has negative connotations because it suggests people "handcuff" themselves to a partner out of necessity or desperation. However, there are benefits to getting "cuffed," such as physical intimacy, warmth, and safety. Relationships that begin during cuffing season are often short-term or temporary and tend to last as long as the season itself. While it is fine if both parties are looking for something short-term, it is not ideal if one person is investing in a relationship that the other person plans to end as soon as the weather gets warmer.
