Cyber safety, also known as online safety, electronic safety, or e-safety, is the act of maximizing a users awareness of personal safety and security risks to private information and property associated with using the Internet, and the self-protection from computer crime. It is implemented in various organizations to protect data, which is known as information security. Cyber safety is important because being online exposes us to cybercriminals and others who commit identity theft, fraud, and harassment.

Common threats to personal safety include phishing, internet scams, malware, cyberstalking, cyberbullying, online predators, and sextortion. Cyberstalking is the use of the Internet or other electronic means to stalk or harass an individual, group, or organization. It may include false accusations, defamation, slander, and libel. It may also include monitoring, identity theft, threats, vandalism, solicitation for sex, or gathering information that may be used to threaten, embarrass, or harass. Cyberbullying is the use of electronic means such as instant messaging, social media, e-mail, and other forms of online communication with the intent to abuse, intimidate, or overpower an individual.

To protect against cyber threats, cybersecurity measures rely on cryptographic protocols to encrypt emails, files, and other critical data. Maintaining cybersecurity in a constantly evolving threat landscape is a challenge for all organizations. A more proactive and adaptive approach is necessary to keep up with changing security risks. National Cybersecurity Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide in October to raise awareness about cybersecurity and increase the resiliency of the nation in the event of a cyber incident.
