Cyclopentolate eye drops are used to dilate (enlarge) the pupil of the eye and to temporarily relax or provide short-term paralysis of the eye muscles. They are used before eye examinations such as cycloplegic refraction or ophthalmoscopy. Cyclopentolate works by blocking certain receptors found in the eye. It is usually used at the beginning of an eye examination, and the dose may need to be repeated in 5 to 10 minutes. Cyclopentolate eye drops are for use only in the eye(s) and should not be swallowed. They should be used with caution in infants and young children, children with blond hair or blue eyes, and elderly people. If you experience any irritation, pain, swelling, excessive tear production, or light-sensitivity while using the eye drops, flush the treated eye(s) with lots of water (room temperature) for at least 15 minutes. Stop using the eye drops and contact your doctor if these symptoms persist.
