Cytopoint is a veterinary medicine used to treat atopic and allergic dermatitis in dogs, which is inflammation of the skin that is linked to allergy, often to things in the environment such as house dust mites and pollens. It is an injection that is given by a veterinarian and is specifically designed to target and neutralize one of the main proteins that send itch signals to a dog’s brain that triggers scratching, licking, and chewing. Cytopoint works like a dog’s own immune system and blocks signals that trigger environmental allergic itch, so the constant scratching can stop and the skin has a chance to heal. It is safe to use in dogs of any age and can also be used in dogs on many other commonly used medications or dogs with other diseases. Cytopoint is not a drug-based treatment, so it does not put pressure on the liver and kidneys. The injection is effective within eight hours of injection and the effect lasts for up to 28 days. Some dogs may need continuous treatment with Cytopoint, whereas other dogs may only need it seasonally. Studies have shown that dogs that received Cytopoint had no more side effects than dogs receiving placebo.
