In Daoism, the term "Dao" (or "Tao") can mean "way," "road," "channel," "path," "doctrine," or "line". It is a fundamental concept of Chinese philosophy and religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the Tao, which is generally understood as being the impersonal, enigmatic, and underlying cosmic power that creates the universe, supports culture and the state, saves the good and punishes the wicked. The Dao is ultimately indescribable and transcends all analysis and definition. From the point of view of Daoism, the Confucian concept of dao was too limited, as it was an ethical or moral way that exaggerated the importance of man and failed to pay attention to the lessons which Nature has to offer about time and change, gain and loss, the useful and the useless. Daoists preferred to understand the Dao as the Way of Nature as a whole. They believed that since human life is really only a small part of a larger process of nature, the only human actions which ultimately make sense are those which are in accord with the flow of Nature - the Dao or the Way. The theoretical mark of Daoism is an interest in the meaning or nature of Dao which may inform or encourage Daoist attitudes.
