A debit memo or debit memorandum is a document that records and notifies a customer of a debit adjustment made to their individual bank account. There are different types of debit memos, and their purposes vary depending on the industry and context. Here are some examples:
-
Banking: In banking, a debit memo refers to a deduction by the bank from the customers bank account. It can be due to bank fees, bounced check fees, or charges for printing checks, among others.
-
Business-to-business transactions: In this context, a debit memo can be used to adjust invoices after theyre sent. For example, if a seller accidentally submits an invoice thats too low, they can send a debit memo to correct it and increase the invoice after its sent. The customer can then use the memo to adjust their books.
-
Retail banking: In retail banking, a debit memo is provided to an account holder to indicate that an account balance has been decreased due to a reason other than a cash withdrawal, a cashed check, or use of a debit card. Debit memos can arise as a result of bank service charges, bounced check fees, or charges for printing checks.
Debit memos are not issued for normal debit transactions on an account, such as cashing a check or using a debit card.
