Def Comedy Jam is a television series produced by Russell Simmons that aired on HBO from March 7, 1992, to May 2, 1997. The show was created to showcase African-American comedians and helped to launch the careers of several notable performers, including Bernie Mac, Steve Harvey, Martin Lawrence, DL Hughley, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and more. The series was hosted by Martin Lawrence and Tony Rock. The show had a signature aesthetic, a house style, that was profane and swaggered with the bravado of gangsta rap, in which the jokes were acted out as much as told, and the subject matter kept a tight focus on sex. The show returned in 2006 and again in 2017 with a new title, "All Def Comedy". Def Comedy Jam is available to stream on Netflix.
