Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a man-made chemical that belongs to a family of chemicals called phthalates. DEHP is the most common member of the class of phthalates, which are used as plasticizers_phthalate). It is a colorless liquid with almost no odor and is more soluble in materials such as oil than in water. DEHP is found in many household items, including tablecloths, floor tiles, shower curtains, garden hoses, rainwear, dolls, toys, shoes, medical tubing, furniture upholstery, and swimming pool liners_phthalate). It is also used as a hydraulic fluid and as a dielectric fluid in capacitors_phthalate). DEHP is widely used as a plasticizer in manufacturing of articles made of PVC, and plastics may contain 1% to 40% of DEHP_phthalate). DEHP is also used as a solvent in glowsticks_phthalate). Approximately three million tonnes of DEHP are produced and used annually worldwide_phthalate).

DEHP is an indoor air pollutant in homes and schools, and common exposures come from the use of DEHP as a fragrance carrier in cosmetics, personal care products, laundry detergents, colognes, scented candles, and air fresheners_phthalate). The most likely way to be exposed to DEHP is by eating food that is contaminated with it. DEHP can get into food if stored in plastic containers made using DEHP. People, especially children, may also be exposed by swallowing contaminated dust particles. Certain medical procedures, such as blood transfusions, kidney dialysis, and use of respirators can increase exposure if the plastic tubing contains DEHP.

DEHP, along with other phthalates, is believed to cause endocrine disruption in males, through its action as an androgen_phthalate). In men, increased exposure to DEHP has been linked with decreased testosterone and sperm motility, although no evidence of fertility problems has been seen in people. Some studies have shown that exposure of pregnant women to higher levels of DEHP during pregnancy might lead to effects in their children (preterm birth, altered timing of puberty in boys and girls, delayed mental development, and testicles that do not descend properly) . Rats and mice that ate DEHP for a long period of time developed liver cancer. Some animals developed pancreatic and testicular cancer. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) classified DEHP as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen (a substance that can cause cancer) .
