The Delimitation Commission is a commission established by the Government of India under the provisions of the Delimitation Commission Act. Its main task is redrawing the boundaries of the various constituencies within the country. The Commission is appointed by the President of India and comprises a retired judge of the Supreme Court or a high court, the Chief Election Commissioner, and the State Election Commissioner. The Delimitation Commission is a high power body whose orders have the force of law and cannot be called into question before any court. Its orders are laid before the Lok Sabha and the respective State Legislative Assemblies, but no change is permitted in them. The present delimitation of constituencies has been done on the basis of the 2001 census under the provisions of the Delimitation Act, 2002. Delimitation is important to provide equal representation to equal segments of a population, ensure fair division of geographical areas so that one political party doesn’t have an advantage over others in an election, and follow the principle of “One Vote One Value”. The Delimitation Commission has been constituted four times in the past — 1952, 1963, 1973, and 2002 — under Delimitation Commission Acts of 1952, 1962, 1972, and 2002.
