Delta-8 and delta-9 are two different types of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) found in the cannabis sativa plant, which naturally produces more than 100 cannabinoids. Here are some key differences between delta-8 and delta-9 THC:
Delta-8 THC:
- Is a cannabinoid found through hemp derived from the cannabis sativa plant.
- Is less potent than delta-9 THC, but still has potential intoxicating effects.
- Has been reported to cause low levels of anxiety and paranoia compared to delta-9 THC.
- Binds to CB1 receptors less strongly than delta-9 THC, which is what makes it less psychoactive than delta-9 THC.
Delta-9 THC:
- Is the component responsible for the “high” people may experience from using cannabis.
- Mimics the cannabinoids, called endocannabinoids, that our bodies naturally produce.
- Affects the same brain functions as endocannabinoids, such as appetite, learning, memory, anxiety, depression, pain, sleep, mood, body temperature, and immune responses.
- Has been approved by the FDA to treat chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in cancer patients and to stimulate appetite in HIV/AIDS patients.
Its important to note that delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safe use and may be marketed in ways that put the public health at risk. The FDA has also received adverse event reports involving delta-8 THC-containing products, and misuse can lead to abuse, which can end in an unwanted addiction.
