Demeter is the Greek goddess of agriculture, grain, and bread who sustained mankind with the earths rich bounty. Her Roman equivalent is Ceres, who was listed among the Dii Consentes, Romes equivalent to the Twelve Olympians of Greek mythology. The worship of Demeter has formally merged with that of Ceres around 205 BC, along with the ritus graecia cereris, a Greek-inspired form of cult, as part of Romes general religious recruitment of deities as allies against Carthage, towards the end of the Second Punic War.
