Devising in drama, also known as devised theatre, is a method of theatre-making in which the script or performance score originates from collaborative, often improvisatory work by a performing ensemble. Unlike traditional theatre, where a single playwright writes the text and then a director casts actors and selects designers to interpret that text, in devising, the collective artists begin without a script. The process of creating a devised piece of theatre can literally start with anything, such as a painting, a song, a real-life event, a novel to adapt, etc. .

Devising methods vary, and collaborating groups tend to develop distinct methodologies based upon the backgrounds and talents of their members. Work creation may begin with an image, a plot, a theme, a character, historical documents, an entire novel, or a single line as a point of departure. A devised work may be text-based or entirely physical, politically engaged, purely aesthetic, a docudrama, a melodrama, a performative ritual, a fairytale, etc. .

The process of devising a piece of theatre can be a stimulating and exciting journey towards the development of a performance that is a fusion of the unique talents and creativity of the group. It is not a direct journey, but one in which the group will encounter well-trodden paths, blind alleys, and sudden surprises. In order to prepare, the group needs to have a good grasp of improvisatory skills.

In devising, students should be encouraged to explore all the elements of theatre, including mime, movement, stillness, sound, music, and lighting. Experiment with staging, including theatre in the round, traverse, and thrust, as well as the use of different levels.
