Dhammachakra Pravartan Din is a Buddhist festival celebrated in India to commemorate the Buddhist conversion of B. R. Ambedkar and his approximately 600,000 followers on 14 October 1956 at Deekshabhoomi, Nagpur. It is celebrated on Ashoka Vijayadashami (Dussehra) every year, which marks the day when Dr. Ambedkar converted to Buddhism in 1956. The festival is also known as Dhammachakra AnuPravartan Din or Dhammachakra AnuPravartan Diwas.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, renounced Hinduism and accepted Buddhism on this day. He fought against caste discrimination against Dalits and wrote extensively against caste in Hinduism. The conversion of Dr. Ambedkar from Hinduism to Buddhism was a well-considered choice driven by a desire to escape the clutches of the oppressive caste system deeply entrenched in Hinduism then.
On this day, many Buddhists gather at Deekshabhoomi to celebrate the mass conversion of people to Buddhism. People belonging to the Buddhist community and B.R. Ambedkars followers mark the momentous day by paying tribute to Lord Buddha and Dr. Ambedkar, whose teachings have inspired many to date.
