Dharma Yoga is a style of yoga that blends techniques from Hatha yoga and numerous other styles with traditional yogic philosophy and meditation. It is named after Sri Dharma Mittra, a classical Hatha-Raja Yoga Master, who devoted fifty years of his life to the direct experience and dissemination of Yoga. Here are some key features of Dharma Yoga:

  • Asana Practice: Dharma Yoga as an asana practice is a graceful and challenging practice that encourages practitioners to work towards the full poses "with angry determination". Most poses are held for a longer period of time than in vinyasa practices, which adds a level of difficulty. It can, however, still be a dynamic practice.

  • Vinyasa Sequences: Dharma yoga includes a progressive series of vinyasa sequences designed to allow the free flow of prana energy up and down the spine and throughout the physical body and mind. The postures include stretching, twists, balancing poses, backbends, and some inversions.

  • Philosophy and Meditation: Dharma yoga incorporates all of the eight limbs of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras. Specifically, it includes pranayama breathing exercises, meditation, and even instruction on yogic philosophy and lifestyle with the ultimate goal of reaching Self-realization, or knowledge of the true Self.

  • Dharma Mittra: Dharma Mittra is a guru of modern yoga and a student of Swami Kailashananda. He is known for his Master Yoga Chart of 908 Postures, each asana illustrated with a photograph of Mittra performing the pose. He has been teaching since 1967 and is the director of the Dharma Yoga Center in New York City, which he founded in 1975.

Dharma Yoga is a complete practice that emphasizes good health, a clear mind, and spiritual awakening. It can be practiced by yogis at the level appropriate to their skills.
