The DHLPP vaccine is a five-way vaccine that protects dogs from several serious diseases. It is also known as the DHPP vaccine, which is considered one of the core vaccines by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) . The vaccine is given to puppies in a series of injections starting at about 6 weeks of age and given every 2 to 4 weeks until the puppy is 16 weeks old. Adult dogs should receive a booster shot of the DHPP vaccine either yearly or every 3 years based on your vets recommendation.
The DHPP vaccine contains small, modified amounts of the viruses it protects from, including the distemper virus, canine adenovirus, canine parvovirus, and the canine parainfluenza virus. The vaccine protects dogs from five highly contagious viral diseases that cause severe illness and pose a serious risk to your pets longevity, including:
- Canine Distemper Virus (D - Distemper)
- Hepatitis (H)
- Parvovirus (P)
- Parainfluenza (P)
- Leptospirosis (L)
DHPP is a highly recommended core vaccination for dogs in North America. Trips to the vet may be more frequent for dogs with weakened immune systems or those who may have other health needs.
