DHS authorization is a work restriction that can be listed on a Social Security card issued to people lawfully admitted to the United States on a temporary basis who have DHS authorization to work. This means that the individuals immigration status is valid, but they need separate documents to prove that they are allowed to work in the United States, such as an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) . A Social Security card with the endorsement "Valid for Work Only With DHS Authorization" cannot be used alone to prove to an employer that the individual is authorized to work in the United States. Instead, the individual must provide additional documentation that proves their authorization to work, such as an official EAD issued by the DHS. Employers must ask for supplementary documentation that satisfies the requirements of the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form.
