Diet culture is a pervasive belief system that associates food with morality and thinness with goodness. It is a collective set of social expectations that tells us how we should eat, look, and that we are more accepted if our bodies look a certain way. Diet culture is dangerous and could harm people of all sizes, sex, and age. It is a shape-shifter that can be seen in before-and-after transformation photos, in all the posts talking about food as though its "somehow virtuous," or in the idea that we have to be healthy. Diet culture is a system of social beliefs and expectations that values thinness above all, equates having a thin body with being healthy, and puts the pursuit of thinness on a moral pedestal. It promotes weight loss and maintaining a low weight as a way to elevate social status, and demonizes certain foods and eating styles while elevating others. Diet culture messaging can be seen in the form of healthism, which is the idea that we have to be healthy, and there is a moral imperative. Diet culture is so strong and ubiquitous that it can feel like gravity, but resisting its pull isn’t futile. We can fight diet culture by examining our fatphobia on three levels: the intrapersonal level, the interpersonal level, and the systemic level. We can also practice intuitive eating, which is a way of eating that is based on internal cues of hunger and fullness, rather than external rules and restrictions.
