DigiYatra is a mobile-based ID storage platform that uses facial recognition technology to make terminal entry and security clearance at the airport a seamless, hassle-free, and paperless process. It is an initiative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Digi Yatra Foundation, aimed at providing a Biometric Enabled Seamless Travel (BEST) experience based on Facial Recognition System (FRS) . The DigiYatra app was developed by Hyderabad-based startup Dataevolve Solutions, which was selected through the national start-up challenge conducted by NITI Aayog under Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) .
To use the DigiYatra app, passengers need to link their identity credentials using DigiLocker or Offline Aadhaar, take a selfie picture when prompted, and upload it onto the app. After that, they can update their boarding pass on the DigiYatra app and share it with the departure airport. The technology is integrated with the Airlines Departure Control System, so only authenticated passengers can enter the terminal. The DigiYatra app is available on both Google Play Store (for Android platform) and App Store (for iOS platform).
DigiYatra was launched on 1 December 2022, and in April 2023, the Digi Yatra service was expanded to Vijayawada, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Pune airports. The DigiYatra is available at three airports - Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Delhi; Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, Varanasi; and Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. It will be implemented at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada, and Hyderabad airports by March 2023.
