Dining etiquette refers to the rules of behavior and manners that are expected while eating, which may include the use of utensils. Different cultures have different rules for table manners, and each family or group sets its own standards for how strictly these rules are to be followed. Proper etiquette is essential for making a favorable impression at both lunch/dinner interviews as well as in social business situations. Here are some general guidelines for dining etiquette:

Before the meal:

  • Arrive on time and call ahead if you know you will be late.
  • Do not place any bags, purses, sunglasses, cell phones, or briefcases on the table.
  • Turn off your cell phone before sitting down.

Table setting:

  • When presented with a variety of eating utensils, remember the guideline to "start at the outside and work your way in".
  • The napkin should remain on your lap throughout the entire meal. Place your napkin on your chair, or to the left of your plate, if you leave the table as a signal to the server that you will be returning.
  • Keep your elbows off the table. Rest the hand you are not using in your lap.

During the meal:

  • Wait for the host to begin eating before you start.
  • Make good eye contact. Dont forget to introduce yourself to the host/hostess and dont interrupt conversations.
  • Eat quietly and avoid slurping food or making noise with cutlery.
  • Pass items around the table instead of reaching over someones plate to pick up food or other items.
  • If you need to get up, place the napkin on your chair.

After the meal:

  • Wait for the host to signal that the meal is over before leaving the table.
  • Thank the host or hostess for the meal.

Remember that proper dining etiquette is important in both professional and social situations, and following these guidelines can help you make a good impression and show respect for those around you.
